Suspects arrested in Portage after crashing stolen vehicle

PORTAGE, Mich. — Two suspects involved in a car theft in Allegan were arrested Saturday after crashing the stolen car while trying to elude police.

Around 5:00 Saturday evening, officers with Portage Department of Public Safety were call to the Meijer located on South Westnedge Avenue on a report of retail fraud.

According to officers, a man and woman committed retail fraud and ran out of the store and into a vehicle.

License plate information and the model of the SUV obtained by Meijer security matched a stolen 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320 from Allegan.

The suspects attempted to drive away in the SUV, heading eastbound on Kilgore Road before driving off the road and hitting a sign. The two suspects got out and ran.

Both suspects, a 28 year old woman from Plainwell and a 27 year old man from Allegan were taken into custody shortly after.

They were taken to a local hospital for treatment of crash related injuries.

According to earlier information from police, the vehicle in question had been stolen from bowling alley parking lot in Allegan on Friday morning.
