‘Deadliest Catch’ captain Tony Lara dead at 50

STURGIS, S.D. — Tony Lara, who appeared as a ship captain on Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch, died in South Dakota on Saturday while attending a motorcycle rally event, authorities have confirmed.

Lara died in his sleep at a private home, according to Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin. He was 50 years old.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Monday, according to the Rapid City Journal.

According to Lara’s bio on the Discovery Channel website, he was the captain of the Cornelia Marie. He worked on the boat for 10 years in the 1990’s and was a close friend of Phil Harris, the former captain of the Cornelia Marie who died in 2010.
