MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Michigan State Police announced early Wednesday evening that they had arrested a Muskegon Heights woman for solicitation to commit the murder of her ex-husband.

Authorities confirmed for FOX 17 NEWS that the woman arrested is 40-year-old Evelyn Danielle Smith (pictured). She was arrested and jailed on charges related to an attempt to solicit a female undercover officer to kill her ex-husband.

Police said that the scenario began July 27 when troopers and detectives from the Michigan State Police Rockford Post, the Grand Haven Detachment and the West Michigan Enforcement Team (WEMET) initiated an investigation into an allegation of solicitation to commit murder. MSP personnel were contacted by a 43-year-old Muskegon Heights man who advised that he had discovered that his ex-wife, with whom he still resided, was attempting to contrive a plan to arrange his death through homicide.

MSP initiated an extensive investigation that identified the complainant’s ex-wife as a 40-year-old woman. During their investigation, MSP personnel exposed the plot by the suspect to kill her ex-husband.

On Tuesday, MSP established an undercover operation in which an MSP female undercover officer posing as an assassin met with the suspect in Muskegon Heights. During this meeting, the suspect contracted with the undercover officer to kill her ex-husband. The manner of death and payment for the murder contract were discussed and agreed upon.

Later Tuesday, following the meeting with the undercover officer, the suspect was arrested for solicitation to commit murder and lodged at the Muskegon County Jail.

Smith is being held without bond.

The investigation is now in the hands of the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office.
