Mom of boy accused in murder sentenced for welfare fraud

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A woman whose young son is facing murder charges has been sentenced for welfare fraud.

Anita Lawhorn was sentenced Tuesday to 40 hours of community service, to be served within 90 days, in lieu of 20 days in jail.  She was also assessed court costs and fees and $14,536 in restitution to the state of Michigan.

Lawhorn’s son, Jamarion, is accused of killing 9-year-old Connor Verkerke last August on a Kentwood playground.  He is still awaiting trial.  Jamarion was 12 at the time of killing.
