MARION, Mich. – Michigan State Police are releasing more information about a trooper-involved shooting from Wednesday that left a man dead.

The incident happened near the intersection of M-115 and 20 Mile Road in Osceola County.

A resident called police at about 12:05pm to report a car on its side, up against a house at the intersection. The caller said there was a man, “frantically running around.”

The trooper arrived about 20 minutes later and witnesses say the man rushed at the trooper with a metal pipe.  The trooper discharged his Taser at the man, but it did not stop him.  The trooper then fired his service weapon, striking the man, killing him. The man is identified as Eugene Kailing, 43, of Hersey.

Kailing was on probation for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

Police are still investigating the incident and an autopsy on Kailing is scheduled for Thursday in Grand Rapids.  Police ask that anyone who saw the incident or witnessed Kailing on either July 14 or 15 to contact them at 989-773-5951.
