WYOMING, Mich. – The fourth annual backpack giveaway in Wyoming is set for Aug. 8. However, sponsors like El Informador said they are still looking for organizations to sponsor the event and provide backpacks and school supplies for kids.
The event takes place at the mega mall on 34th Street and Division Avenue in Wyoming. It begins at noon, with food and family friendly activities.
Organizers said during last year’s event more than 3,000 families came out for family-fun and to collect about 1,000 backpacks. This event is free with entertainment to bring the community together to celebrate education during one of the last weeks of summer.
Community and event organizer Rosie del Valle, and media strategist with Creative Change Mission, told FOX 17 News the message to school kids is that a backpack is a necessary tool to be successful.
"A backpack is where you carry the tools that will help you be successful in your academics,” said Rosie del Valle, event and community organizer. “When we think of the celebration with El Informador and the backpack giveaway, over a thousand backpacks get distributed to the kids.”
“It's a celebration of education: this is a backpack, our priority is education, we will celebrate the child, we will celebrate education, and we will come together as a family and as a community to make it happen,” said del Valle.
