GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 4-year-old girl has died after being caught in hanging clothes while reaching for a toy, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Mark Bennett, Mikayla Rae VanderLaan died Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the 13000 block of Sunset Place in Grand Haven Township Sunday evening after her stepfather found her unresponsive.
VanderLaan was rushed to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon and later airlifted to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. Bennett said that it appears she became entangled in clothes that were hanging on the back of a bedroom door.
