Grand Rapids man drowns in lake in Ottawa County

Posted

WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 66-year-old man from Grand Rapids drowned in a private lake late Thursday morning.

It happened just before noon in the 2900 block of Roosevelt Street in Wright Township.

Authorities said the man and a friend were fishing in a small aluminum rowboat. The man tried to stand up and the boat overturned, so both men started swimming to shore. The man was about 15 feet from the shoreline when authorities said he became unresponsive. The friend called for help and a nearby resident helped the man get out of the water.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said attempts to resuscitate him were not successful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
