F-16 jet, Cessna airplane collide over South Carolina

(CNN) — An F-16 Air Force jet and a small Cessna airplane collided Tuesday over South Carolina, an FAA spokesman said.

The F-16’s pilot ejected safely before the military aircraft crashed in a field in Berkeley County, according to Capt. Robert McCullough of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The fate of those on the Cessna, which McCullough said went into the Cooper River, wasn’t immediately known.

CNN affiliate WCBD showed a picture of what appeared to be a jet engine lying next to a mobile home in Berkeley County.

Jim Peters, the FAA spokesman, said the two aircraft hit each other at 11 a.m. about 11 miles north of Charleston.
