GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A boat returning to the Harbor Island boat launch caught fire today at about 4 PM.

Around noon, the four people left Harbor Island boat launch and boated on Lake Michigan. Upon returning, they said that they smelled gas, and after checking the engine, found that the fuel pump was leaking. A towel was placed around the fuel pump and they continued toward the boat launch.

As the boat approached, it caught fire.

Police say that the four passengers jumped ship. They were rescued from the water by passing boaters. The only injury sustained was a cut on one the passengers.

The fire was put out by the Ottawa County Marine Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The boat was a 1988 20′ Crestliner.
