Gone Fishing – Getting the kids involved

Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Many people who like to fish want to get their kids involved in fishing too.  But how do you go about doing that?

"Get them the right equipment," says Scott DeVries of Al & Bob's Sports. " You want to get them something that is easy to use, so they don't get frustrated.  Then, you want to take them to a place with a lot of fish - not big fish - just a lot of fish."

Photojournalist Brian Farber brought his sons Evan and Colin along for their first time fishing.  Scott outfitted the boys with simple spin-cast combo poles, the easiest to use for first-timers.

A few casts in and the boys were getting bites.  Colin got his first and Evan got his shortly thereafter.

Once kids are hooked there are several youth fishing opportunities out there.  Some high schools are starting Fishing Teams and Grand Valley State University currently has the #1 Bass Fishing Team in the U.S.

You can enter the Al & Bob's Big Bass Photo Contest on their Facebook page .  Last week's winner was Barbara Hudson of Grand Rapids.  There is just one week left to enter.
