PORTAGE, Mich. – The Portage Department of Public Safety responded to a call of smoke in a structure around the 6000 block of Independence around 1:35 a.m. on Saturday.
PDPS Fire division arrived on the scene to discover black smoke coming from the front door of the apartment. The fire was located in the basement and extinguished.
The PDPS Police Division evacuated the adjoining apartments. They say no one was hurt during the fire.
The fire is undergoing further investigation.
