EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 16-year-old was killed Sunday morning after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree, officers say.
The crash happened around 7:50 a.m. near the intersection of Verona Road and 11 Mile. Officers tell Fox 17 that the driver lost control of his PT Cruiser while driving west on Verona, eventually crashing head-on into a tree near the roadway. They say that speed may have played a factor in the incident.
The teen has been identified as Christopher Powell of Battle Creek. He was a student in the Harper Creek Public Schools. Grief counselors are on hand at the school today and Tuesday in the high school library.
The passenger, Ethan Surprenant, 15, is in critical condition at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He is also a Harper Creek student.
