NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. -- The Muskegon River Task Force is returning this summer to prevent people from trashing the river and trespassing, according to a release from the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office.
"The task force was created in response to complaints on the river, including trespassing, disorderly conduct, underage drinking, littering and other violations of the law," the release says.
The multi-agency law enforcement presence started last summer. Officials said in the release that during the summer of 2014 there were 136 arrests or citations and 234 traffic stops near river access sites. There will be at least five patrol boats on the water each weekend this summer, according to the release.
"We want people to have fun and enjoy themselves," Newaygo County Sheriff Pat Hedlund said in the release. "But, we also want people to know that we will enforce the law in order to protect people and property."
