BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. — The United States Army says a soldier originally from Michigan was killed in an apparent shooting on Memorial Day.
According to a press release, 1st Lt. David Lee Mitchell, 30, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound at his on-base residence on May 25. Circumstances behind the shooting were not released.
1st Lt. Mitchell is listed as originally being from Berrien Springs. He entered active-duty service in August 2008, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2009 to September 2010, and was commissioned to the Engineer Corps in January 2013. He was assigned to Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since October 2013.
The press release issued by the U.S. Army listed Mitchell’s awards and decorations:
Two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal and Parachutist Badge.
