HATTIESBURG, Miss.–Two police officers are dead following a shooting Saturday night.

Officials believe that two men gunned down the Hattiesburg Police Officers–Benjamin J. Deen, 34, and Liquori Tate, 25–during a traffic stop. Authorities said the suspects took off in an officer’s car, which was later found abandoned.

Both officers were taken to the hospital, and later pronounced dead.

Local news stations in Hattiesburg reported that both men suspected in the shooting, Curtis and Marvin Banks, were arrested early Sunday morning.

A newspaper in Jackson reported that the last killing of a Hattiesburg police officer was on New Year’s Eve 1984. It also reported that Tate was a recent graduate from the police academy, and that Deen was a K-9 officer who was named the city’s Officer of the Year in 2012.
