Cheaper by the baker’s dozen, family’s 13th baby expected by Mother’s Day

ROCKFORD, Mich. - After raising 12 boys under one roof, a West Michigan family is getting ready to welcome their 13th baby.

The Schwandts have been making National headlines ever since their twelfth child. Now, the family's expecting their newest member this Saturday, just one day before Mother's Day.

Jay Schwandt, the father of soon-to-be 13 children said people always try and speculate why they keep having children.

"Everybody assumes that we just keep trying and trying until we have a girl and that's just not the case," said Jay. "We are blessed to have twelve happy and healthy boys."

You might remember Fox 17's visit with the Schwandts in August, 2013 after welcoming their last little boy into the world.

A large family is something welcomed by this ever-growing family. Jay said he's just one of two children while his wife Kateri was the 13th child out of 14; putting this child near and dear to her heart.

"And I was number thirteen so it's special whether it's a boy or a girl," said Kateri.

But Jay doesn't think they'll be painting the nursery room pink anytime soon.

"As long as we're raising all these kids I'd love to have a girl, I just don't think it's in the cards," said Jay.

So whether it's a boy or a girl, the Schwandt boys are just excited to have a new sibling to play with. While mom and dad plan to celebrate this Mother's Day with another baby.

Jay and Kateri tell us their biggest challenge raising a large family is time management and doing household chores.

When we eat dinner there's 14 plates and 14 cups, so the dishes have to be done a couple times a day," said Jay.

But they're not worried and said they're ready for number 13.
