HOLLAND, Mich.–One person is dead and two others injured following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 4:15 a.m. on US-31 north of Chicago Drive, though initial reports stated it was closer to James Street. The vehicle apparently swerved back and forth from the median, causing it to roll over. Deputies said the backseat passenger, 26-year-old Nickie Thomas from Benton Harbor, wasn’t wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the car. She died at the scene.
The driver, 36-year-old Kenyada Hornes from Benton Harbor, and front passenger, 26-year-old Shalisa Porter also from Benton Harbor, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash–deputies said they were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s office said it’s unclear at this time whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
All northbound lanes of US-31 near Chicago Drive were shut down for about 3 and a half hours after the crash as crews cleared the scene.
