KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Undersheriff Jon Hess will retire after 36 years with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, the department announced Thursday.

“After great thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from the Kent County Sheriff Department effective June 1, 2015,” Hess said in a release. “My years at this wonderful organization have been an absolute blessing.”

Hess started at the Grand Rapids Police Department in 1980 and moved to the sheriff’s department that same year as a corrections officer, according to a release.

He worked as a corrections sergeant, lieutenant and captain before being promoted to undersheriff in 2001.
