KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP – A 21-year-old suspect is behind bars in Kalamazoo County, accused of breaking into a home over the weekend and threatening five women before his arrest.
Kendall Marcell Williams-Johnson is charged with Assault with Intent to Rob while Armed, 1st Degree Home Invasion, 2nd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and Assault with a Dangerous weapon following an incident at a home in the 800 block of Craft Street around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
Investigators say a 911 call was placed by an overnight guest at the home describing a dispute involving a man armed with a knife.
First responders found the front door of the home open when they arrived and could hear a woman screaming inside.
Once officers announced their presence, a man broke out of a second story window then jumped onto the roof of the nearby garage then to the ground. Officers were able to catch him and detain him, finding he was armed with two knives.
Officer found five women inside the home, a resident and four overnight guests.
The resident told authorities she answered a knock at the door early Saturday morning to a man whose face was covered with a bandana who forced his way inside armed with a knife.
The resident told police the suspect threatened to kill her, demanding money. The male suspect forced the resident upstairs where the 4 guests were, also threatening them as well demanding money.
As the suspect started making his way through the house to steal things, at least two of the women were able to escape the home, while one of them was able to barricade herself in a bathroom and call police.
One of the women in the home suffered a minor cut to her hand, a defensive wound from the suspect’s knife. She was treated at the scene for her injuries. The five women in the home and the time of the crimes were in the age range of 19 to 33 years old.
The suspect, later identified as Kendall Marcell Williams-Johnson, claimed to be homeless. He suffered lacerations and abrasions during his escape attempt, treated at Borgess Medical Center then lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
He currently remains in custody, held on a $50,000 bond.
