BYRON CENTER, Mich.–A teenager is dead and another hospitalized after a crash Friday evening.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, it happened at Wilson Ave SW and 92nd Ave SW at 6:30 p.m. Deputies said the driver of the vehicle lost control while traveling south on Wilson, left the road, and struck a tree.

The driver, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the vehicle, also 17, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for facial lacerations and a fractured leg. Deputies said the passenger was later released.

Authorities said alcohol was not a contributing factor, and both teens were wearing their seat belts. Byron Center High School was advised of the situation, and said they’ll be available for grief counseling for students in need.
