ROXAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 17-year-old from Eaton County is dead after a police-involved shooting over the weekend.
According to Lansing-area stations, on Saturday night, a sergeant from the Eaton County Sheriff’s Department stopped Deven Guildford along M-43. During that stop, investigators say things turned physical and Guildford was shot and killed by that sergeant.
At this point, details of why the teen was stopped or what sparked the fight have not been released.
The sergeant, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital for unknown injuries. That officer is on paid administrative leave, per department policy while an investigation is underway by Michigan State Police.
This is the second police-involved shooting to happen in Eaton County in just a couple of weeks.
On February 17, a man was killed during a shootout with sheriff’s deputies. During that incident, there was a call about a car in a ditch. When deputies arrived, there was a confrontation with a man who’s been identified as 32-year-old Matthew Lundy. Officials say he appeared intoxicated at the time and say he was armed.
During that incident, investigators say Lundy got out of his car and started firing at deputies, who returned fire and killed him.
That case also remains under investigation.
