Woman dies when vehicle hits semi stopped along U.S. 131

MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich. — The victim has been identified in a fatal crash on U.S. 131 early Friday morning.

At 2:11 a.m. Friday, the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a traffic accident with injuries on northbound U.S. 131. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found that  a passenger vehicle had run into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had broken down and pulled to the side of the roadway. The vehicle then overturned after hitting the trailer.

A passenger in the vehicle — Megan Raven, 27, of Cadillac — was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle’s driver — Timothy Herlein, 42, of Manton — was transported to Spectrum Health Big Rapids and then was transferred with life-threatening injuries to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where he was listed in fair condition late Friday night.

The truck’s driver was not injured.

The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Big Rapids Fire Department, Big Rapids Township Fire Department and Mecosta County EMS.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office.
