GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A registered sex offender has been charged federally with planning the sexual assault of a mentally challenged minor while he was in prison.

Shane Lee Scott, 40, was arraigned Thursday in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids on one count of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor. Court records say that while Scott was an inmate at the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility, a prison in Ionia, he contacted the victim’s mother about sexually assaulting her teenage “mentally incapable child” beginning last August.

Scott was scheduled for release Feb. 14 after serving a 15-year prison term. However, a federal grand jury indicted him on the new charge on Feb. 12.

Scott faces up to life in prison if convicted of the federal charge.
