KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- A disturbing act of violence has left a 44-year-old woman with burns to the face, torso, and hair after a man intentionally set her on fire, police say.

The incident happened early Friday morning at a home on the 900 block of Douglas Avenue in Kalamazoo.  Police say there was a call to 911 saying a 44-year-old woman was in need of an ambulance.  When officers arrived, they learned she had been intentionally set on fire by a 52-year-old suspect, Ray Charles Jackson, who had fled the scene.

Authorities say the fight started when the 44-year-old woman tried to break up with Jackson. He then tried to strangle her, pulled out a knife, doused her with rubbing alcohol, and lit her on fire.

The suspect was arrested at a separate location.

The woman was able to put the fire out herself by removing her shirt, but she suffered various injuries.  She is expected to be okay.

The suspect faced four charges that include assault by strangulation, assault with the intent of bodily harm, interference of communication, and assault with a dangerous weapon.
