GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A woman was burned when a Friday morning fire extensively damaged a 3-unit apartment building on Butterworth Street.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department responded to the call at 6:15 a.m. Friday. After arriving at the scene firefighters found smoke emerging from the front of the building and flames coming from a first-floor window at the rear.

Everyone was evacuated from the building. One of the occupants of the apartment where the fire was first seen — a woman — later went to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of burns.

Investigators determined the fire started in one of the lower units, spread to the apartment above it and then went into the walls and into the roof.

Firefighters told FOX 17 NEWS that there was extensive damage and that 75 percent of the building was destroyed.

A cause has not yet been determined.
