GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Family members of a longtime area football coach who died this month after a battle with cancer have started the Coach Jim Meerman Endowed Scholarship in his memory.

Meerman played football at Grand Valley State University from 1977 until graduating in 1982. He enjoyed a successful career as a high school football coach, winning 218 games at Coopersville High School. He was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014.

Meerman’s wife, Diane, 34, also graduated from GVSU, as well as his four children, TJ, Josh, Jimi Lynn, and Stacia.

Meerman’s family and the university have started a scholarship program in honor of his life and to help support future Grand Valley students.
