SCHILLER PARK, Ill. — A 29-year-old woman is charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to kill her children with poisoned apple juice.

According to WGN, Krystle El Khatib of Schiller Park, Ill.  is accused of crushing up an anti-anxiety drug, benzodiazepine, into the juice and forcing her 9-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter to drink two glasses each.

She allegedly threatened to hit her son if he didn’t drink it.   Officials say he woke up the next day vomiting and was eventually able to get in touch with his father.

They believe El Khatib did it because she was angry with the kids’ father.  They were treated at the hospital and released into his custody.

After poisoning the children, authorities say El Khatib attempted to poison herself with a similar cocktail.   WGN reports that the criminal complaint against her says she “told a social worker at the hospital that she brought her kids into this world and she can take them out.”
