KALMAZOO, Mich. — An officer with the Kalamazoo Department of Public safety performed a wedding ceremony for a couple after their plans fell through due to poor weather.

Dean Lauer and Carrier Stull had plans to tie the knot at the Kalamazoo County Courthouse at 2 p.m. on Friday. While their wedding day didn’t bring rain, it did bring heavy snow and ice, causing the courthouse shutdown.

Deputy Chief Karianne Thomas, said she noticed the couple standing in their lobby. When asking what they needed they responded with, “someone to marry us.”

Another officer standing by overheard the request and knew of a way to help. Turns out her husband, Joe Paul, also a public safety officer, is licensed to marry people.  They didn’t have to go far to find him, either. Turns out, he was just upstairs getting ready to work third shift.

“As we often respond to crisis, it quickly arranged for Mr. Lauer and Ms. Stull to get married in the Chief’s conference room by PSO Joe Paul and in front of their family and friends,” a KDPS press release stated. ”

The couple was wed in the lobby of the department. They’re currently on their honeymoon.
