GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– Hundreds of West Michigan families will now be able to set the table for Christmas dinner.

Mel Trotter Ministries helped their neighbors in need during the Christmas Food Box Giveaway, handing out more than 700 boxes to families.

Events like the brown bag food drive and turkey drop help supply the ministry with enough food for everyone.

Like many shelters around West Michigan, Mel Trotter says the need grows every year, especially during the colder months.

“A lot of families we have that come here are on a tight budget, so when they have to spend money on heating, that gets taken away from their food budget,” explained Cindy Smies, director of marketing and communications at Mel Trotter Ministries.

But even knowing that, there were a lot of smiles on a day like this.

“Anyone who comes here today is never in a bad mood. It’s just part of the Christmas spirit of giving and receiving and sharing that joy,” Smies said.

To receive a food box, families pre-registered for a voucher through Access of West Michigan. Mel Trotter Ministries will also provide Access of West Michigan with 200 extra Christmas food boxes to distribute in surrounding local food pantries.
