GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Some children will have a brighter Christmas thanks to a handful of police officers and firefighters.

More than a dozen children paired up with Grand Rapids police officers and firefighters for the third annual Shop with a Hero event.

Armed with a $100 gift card from Meijer, they went up and down the aisles looking for that perfect gift for their loved ones, as well as themselves.

"It helps break down some barriers," explained Community Officer Neil Gomez.

"We are not robots. We are human and we care about kids and helping the community is what it's all about."

Meijer and Shop with a Hero has helped 40 kids over the past few years.
