INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. – An Ingham County deputy was killed in a crash early Sunday morning.  The Ingham County Sheriff’s Department said it occured around 2:11 a.m.

Deputy Grant William Whitaker, 25, was chasing a vehicle on Dexter Trail  east of M-52, when he lost control and struck a tree.

Police have confirmed that the vehicle being pursued at the time of the crash is still at large, with the criminal investigation being handed over to Michigan State Police.

Deputy Whitaker worked at the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office for about one and a half years.  Whitaker also worked at the Stockbridge Police Department in the past.

This is only the second Ingham County Deputy ever killed in the line of duty- the first being Sgt. Paul Cole in October 1996.  Sgt. Cole died in a similar manner as Deputy Whitaker, when his car ran off the road and hit a tree on the way to a domestic dispute.
