COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Kalamazoo County family was called out of their house at gunpoint after a report of a murder turned out to be a hoax on Thanksgiving Day.
Thursday evening the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department responded to a home on Hidden Shore Drive after receiving a call that a boy had shot and killed his mother during a dispute. Upon arrival, police told the members of the Sanders family to come out of the home with their hands over their heads. They did so, explained that everyone was fine and police quickly determined that the homicide report was actually false.
Undersheriff Paul Matyas confirmed that it was a case of “swatting,” where a false report is called in to get a police response. He said the call could have come from anywhere in the world.
The incident remains under investigation and was the latest in several recent area “swatting” reports.
