BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- It was a packed house at the Byron Township board meeting with residents filling the room to voice opposition of a recently approved apartment complex.

A group of residents presented 2,233 signatures to the board on Monday night, saying that volunteers collected them in less than three weeks.

The board approved the construction of Springs of Byron Township at 2131 64th Street SW back in October with a 4-3 vote. It's a 260 unit apartment complex that will consist of 20 units in each building.

A board member tells us that the board originally turned the proposal down back in January, but it was re-submitted with slight changes to the plan.

Neighbors tell us they are concerned that the board changed an ordinance that’s been in place for seven years, just to accommodate the construction project.

The group also claims the township isn’t prepared to handle the influx in residents that will move into the 260 unit complex, adding that the township will need more code compliance officers and the schools aren’t prepared for a significant number of new students.

"There's an overwhelming frustration with the way this board consistently fails to consider the opinion of the township residents with your decision making," said resident Cindy Middleton.

"Your jobs are not assured and I'm officially letting you know that the township majority is putting you on probation," said Donna Brandenburg.
