HOLLAND, Mich.–About 25 percent of adopted children in the United States are from another country. As National Adoption Month comes to a close one West Michigan family hopes to once again become part of that community.
“Food works with anything, that’s what I’ve come to know in life,” said Katie Webster.
In this case, that food is cupcakes and the cause is adoption.
“My nephew is being adopted from Niger, Africa so we’re looking to raise funds to bring him home,” Webster said.
It’s a cause close to Webster’s heart. She has two children of her own and by combining two of her passions, baking and adoption, she hopes to also help her sister’s family expand.
“We just were able to celebrate our own adoption about a month ago. Almost exactly a month ago now we adopted two children out of the foster care system here in Michigan,” Webster said.
But adoption can be expensive. It can cost up to $30,000 to adopt a child from another country.
“It’s pretty important that it’s expensive to trafficking and other unseemly things don’t happen to some of these kid so it’s hard because we wish it was cheaper than that and we’d probably grab up more kids, but certainly there’s a reason for the expense.”
