GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Robert Covington, we hardly knew ye.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Grand Rapids Drive’s first overall pick and defending NBDL Rookie of the Year will sign with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers later this week – less than two weeks after the Pistons’ D-League affiliate made the Tennessee State grad the top pick in the NBDL Draft.
Covington led the Drive with 18 points and seven rebounds in an exhibition win on Saturday.
He signed with the Houston Rockets after he went undrafted last season. He appeared in seven NBA games, averaging 2.3 points. He garnered NBDL ROTY honors by scoring 23.2 points and pulling down 9.2 rebounds in 46 games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
The Drive have yet to confirm the move. Grand Rapids’ roster has to be cut to 12 players by Thursday, before their season opener at Bakersfield on Saturday.
