MUSKEGON, Mich. -- A Muskegon County family is heartbroken following the sudden death of their teenage daughter.

Police joined the search for 15-year-old Heidi Horn shortly after she went missing Monday. Tuesday night, the search ended when her family learned she had taken her own life.

A devastating conclusion for both her family and investigators.

Timothy Horn said that out of all his kids, he was closest with Heidi.

Horn said that he was at work on Tuesday when Heidi’s school called after the high school sophomore didn’t show up for class.

Horn said that Heidi had run away from home before. When he learned on Tuesday she was missing, he was hoping she’d return soon.

"That was the last time I heard and then her calling me, telling me what my daughter did. It hurt me so bad," said Horn.

Heidi Horn had dreams of becoming a hair stylist for celebrities. But Horn said that his daughter had transferred schools and was vocal to her family about being bullied in the past. Social media posts followed, with dark thoughts and warning signs that were brought to her father’s attention about a month ago. Tim said that a conversation followed, but Heidi denied she’d ever harm herself.

"Don't take it for granted when you have your child, because it could be your last," said Horn.

A conversation Horn said that he’d like to have back.

"Try to pay attention to your kid's advice, what they are trying to tell you. That's all I can say. I just wish I listened," said Horn. "When they cry out for help, be there for them, and don't let them go."
