Farmer’s market in Kalamazoo targets evening shoppers

Posted

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Hundreds of people came out to the new nighttime farmer's market in Kalamazoo Thursday.

The night market, which was open on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., featured gourmet food and baked goods as well as fresh produce.

Olivia Syler says she came to the market to enjoy a glass of wine and sample some local food.

"You can't hate drinking wine while you're at the farmer's market," she said.

Chris Broadbent, the market's organizer, is hoping the evening hours will open up a whole new demographic of shoppers.

"A lot of the businesses asked 'Are people going to be buying groceries at nighttime?' but I think people are buying them all throughout the day, otherwise these big stores wouldn't be open 24 hours a day," he said.  "Access can't be defined by hours of the day."
