“He is known to frequent the Kalamazoo south and east side as well as Paw Paw,” stated the news release Tuesday morning.

Police said Shigwadga broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house late Monday night, assaulted her with a weapon, and then set fire to her bedroom with her still inside.

This all happened at a home on Prospect in Kalamazoo at around 10:15 p.m. on Monday.  Officers say the estranged boyfriend assaulted his ex-girlfriend in her bedroom, leaving her with critical injuries.  He then set fire to the bedroom.

Family members of the victim confronted him, but he jumped out of a second-story window and ran away from the scene.

Officers credit a neighbor for springing into action with fire extinguishers, helping to prevent the fire from spreading and doing more damage.

The victim is listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police believe the suspect may have been injured after jumping from the second-story window.
