KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Police are searching for a man who they say broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house, assaulted her with a weapon, and then set fire to her bedroom with her still inside.
This all happened at a home on Prospect in Kalamazoo at around 10:15 p.m. on Monday. Officers say the estranged boyfriend assaulted his ex-girlfriend in her bedroom, leaving her with critical injuries. He then set fire to the bedroom.
Family members of the victim confronted him, but he jumped out of a second-story window and ran away from the scene.
Officers credit a neighbor for springing into action with fire extinguishers, helping to prevent the fire from spreading and doing more damage.
The victim is listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
Police believe the suspect — who is turning 20 years old in the coming days — may have been injured after jumping from the second-story window. They do know his identity, but have not taken him into custody at this time.
