KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan’s offense grabbed the headlines on Saturday – but it’s their defense getting an individual honor on Monday.
Junior defensive tackle Cleveland Smith has been named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high three sacks in the Broncos’ 45-33 win at Idaho.
WMU didn’t have a sack in their season-opening loss at Purdue – and the 6-foot-1, 233-pounder from Miami hadn’t recorded one in 22 career games – but the Broncos defense had four against the Vandals, led by Smith’s career day.
Smith and Western Michigan (1-1) make their home debut on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Murray State (1-1).
