MUSKEGON County, Mich. -- Jordyn Garza, 18, was charged in a Muskegon County courtroom for "reckless driving causing death" and "reckless driving causing impairment."

Whitehall police said Garza was behind the wheel when he crashed a car into a utility pole and then a tree. The crash happened near Division Street and Mears Avenue in an alley in Whitehall.

Garza's cousin, 15-year-old Makaila Stever-Knapp died at the scene. A second teen remains in critical condition.

Police said five people were in the car. Two kids in the backseat got out with little assistance, according to a witness.

Speed is believed to be a main factor, according to Police Chief Roger Squiers.
