COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — With more than a week left in the season, Wynton Bernard stands alone in the West Michigan record book.
The Whitecaps All-Star outfielder singled in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon against the South Bend Silver Hawks for his 159th hit of the year – a new single-season record for the 20-year-old franchise.
After a bunt single in the fifth inning Friday night, Bernard was tied with Nick Castellanos (2011) and Robert Fick (2007) with the previous record of 158.
Bernard entered the weekend as the Midwest League leader in hits, batting average (.331), on-base percentage (.402), total bases (216), and runs scored (89).
