Whitecaps’ Bernard on verge of team hits record

Posted

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- In late January, Wynton Bernard was released by the San Diego Padres organaziation - and admits he had moments where he thought his pro baseball career might be over.

It's amazing what seven months and a second chance can do.

The West Michigan Whitecaps All-Star outfielder heads into the weekend with 157 hits on the season - tops in the Midwest League, and just one away from the team's single-season record. Nick Castellanos and Robert Fick both had 158 hits in 2011 and 2007, respectivally.

That might just be the beginning of the honors for Bernard. The 23-year-old California native is also leading the league in batting average (.331), on-base percentage (.403), total bases (215), and runs scored (89).
