MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (July 9, 2014) — Family members have confirmed the victim in the shooting early Wednesday morning is 14-year-old Dmetrius Washington.
Officers responded to the area of Hoyt and Hovey at around 2:30 a.m. for reports of a subject down. When they arrived, they found Washington who suffered fatal gunshot wounds. It inst clear though just exactly when the shooting happened or why.
His mom, Marquita Render says Washington snuck out of the house to go visit someone. “I told him don’t go back out, ya know how the kids are, they sneak back out when they think their moms asleep. I always tell him everyday don’t be out in the streets cause they killing innocent kids.”
Washington lived nearby, just blocks away from where the shooting happened, she thinks he was on his way home.
Several family members were gathered at his home today angry over the violence, wanting answers on who is responsible.
Washington had just finished the 9th grade in the Muskegon Heights School District.
Render says she doesn’t understand why this happened, she said her son was a good person.”He didn’t mess with nobody, he had good grades. An innocent bystander shot and killed, dead on the ground, just 14 years old,” she said. Her message to whoever is responsible: “Turn yourself in, don’t be a coward. Why you got to pick up guns, put them down.”
The prosecutors office says Washington has no criminal history.
