USA Falls to Germany, Still Advances to Round of 16

RECIFE, Brazil (June 26, 2014) — The United States has survived the “Group of Death” and advanced to the Round of 16 in the World Cup even with a loss to Germany.

Thomas Muller’s goal in the 55th minute was the only scoring in Germany’s 1-0 win over USA. But thanks to Portugal defeating Ghana 2-1 in the other match of Group G, the United States advanced to knockout stage thanks to a better goal differential than Portugal.

The United States had a goal differential of zero thanks to its 2-1 win over Ghana and 2-2 draw with Portugal. Portugal loss to Germany 4-0 in its first match of group play, leaving the team with a goal differential of -3 at the end of group play.

USA will take on the winner of Group H on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
