GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (May 25, 2014) – A 21-year-old man was shot in the back, and multiple others assaulted, at a Memorial Day weekend party early Sunday morning, according to the Kent County Sheriff Department.
Shots were fired just before 2 A.M. after a fight broke out at Cascade Meeting and Banquets Hall, located in the back of the Cascade Center strip mall, at 6282 28 Street SE. Lieutenant Troy Woodwyk told Fox 17 News that the man who was shot is recovering in a Grand Rapids’ hospital in stable condition. Police said there are no shooting suspects at this time, and no one was taken into custody.
Woodwyk also said multiple shell casings were outside in the parking lot of the Banquet Hall, after some bullets struck nearby cars. According to officials, a third party rented the Cascade Banquet Hall for a Memorial Day weekend celebration. Event tickets and broken glass beer bottles littered the area of the front doors to the banquet hall.
The Kent County Sheriff Department’s forensic unit is processing the evidence, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kent County Sheriff’s Department at (616) 632-6215, or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
