AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (May 13, 2014) — The Detroit Pistons may have filled two jobs with one hire.
According to ESPN, the Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have agreed to terms on a 5-year, $35 million deal that will see Van Gundy serve as the team’s head coach and run its basketball operations.
Van Gundy, 54, has a .641 winning percentage in seven-plus seasons as head coach of the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic. Van Gundy led the Heat to a Game 7 loss to the Pistons in the 2005 Eastern Conference Finals. He coached the Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals.
The Pistons fired head coach Maurice Cheeks after just 50 games this season. John Loyer was named the interim head coach for the rest of the season. Loyer still has one-year remaining on his contract with the Pistons.
