ZEELAND, Mich. (May 13, 2014) — A man believed to have escaped from South Carolina law enforcement in 1977 was arrested Monday in Zeeland.
Dallas Norman Smallwood, 58, was sentenced to five years in prison in April 1977 for housebreaking, grand larceny and receiving stolen goods, according to a release.
He is accused of escaping from the Anderson County Stockade Oct. 3 of that year.
U.S. Marshals’ Operation Intercept Task Force in South Carolina adopted the case in June 2013. According to a release their investigation led them to Texas, Kentucky and eventually Michigan.
Smallwood was allegedly living under the name Waylon Wilson. He was arrested without incident at around 4 p.m.
The release says he initially denied his identity, but Marshals say they confirmed he was Smallwood through fingerprint comparison at the Ottawa County Jail.
Smallwood is currently behind bars awaiting extradition back to South Carolina on felony escape charges.
