Driver Ditches Stolen Vehicle During High-Speed Chase

Posted

STURGIS, Mich (May 9, 2014) – Investigators say they’ve identified the driver of a stolen vehicle that led police on a high-speed chase in Sturgis, but are yet to make an arrest.

Thursday, a Sturgis officer spotted the stolen vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. 12 towards Big Hill Road around 1:00 a.m.

After learning the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Colon, Michigan, the officer attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver kept going.

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Deputies joined the chase near U.S. 12 and Halfway road, which continued into the Village of Burr Oak.

That’s when the driver of the vehicle bailed out, crashing the vehicle into a mailbox and tree.  Deputies attempted to chase the suspect on foot but were unsuccessful in making an arrest.  A K-9 track by the Michigan State Police followed and was also unsuccessful.

Authorities say the suspect has been identified after a warrant for Fleeing and Eluding and Resisting and Obstructing police was sent to the Prosecutor for review.
